LA MESA, Calif. — Police arrested a man in La Mesa after he led officers on a high-speed chase across town, ditching his car on a busy street and running off into a canyon.
It all started when police received calls about a possible burglary on Dawson Avenue near El Cajon Boulevard. Officers spotted a silver Acura matching the description of the vehicle seen leaving the scene and tried to pull the driver over, but he sped off. San Diego police chased the man eastward but eventually called off the pursuit.
The man continued driving erratically, weaving in and out of traffic, and finally got out of his car near a trolley station at Spring and High streets to run into a canyon area between two rows of homes. A driver saw the man and called La Mesa police, who started searching the area.
A short time later, officers found the driver in the brush and arrested him. Police later determined the man, identified as 28-year-old Dontae Smith, was not connected to any burglaries, but say he was on parole and had a stolen gun in his car.
