Undocumented Man Dies From the Elements in the Desert

On Friday, Border Patrol Search Trauma and Rescue (BORSTAR) agents in the El Centro sector conducted an exhaustive search through the desert near Calexico for an undocumented man left behind by human smugglers after he fell ill.

San Diego is under an Excessive Heat Warning until Thursday evening and temperatures in the deserts inland deserts have been well over 100 degrees.

Agents found the man unresponsive and despite life-saving efforts, he succumbed to the elements. The man’s body was transferred to the Imperial County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Office.

The El Centro Sector Border Patrol is reminding people to stay hydrated, remain inside air-conditioned buildings as much as possible, limit time outside and wear light clothing. Remember to never leave children or pets in a car for any period of time. Temperatures can become lethal within minutes.
