A man was spotted running from a residence near the Ocean Beach Pier where a woman was found dead in the garage, prompting SWAT officers to descend on two different homes Wednesday morning.

The SWAT team was first called to the multi-unit property near the intersection of Niagara Avenue and Bacon Street at about 4 a.m., San Diego Police Department Lt. Matt Dobbs said.

Moments before a woman’s body was discovered, a man was seen fleeing from the residence, prompting an hours-long search through Ocean Beach for the man believed to be behind the killing, identified by police as 36-year-old Daniel Chase McKibben.

At about 8 a.m., the team descended on a home on Del Mar Avenue where McKibben was believed to be holed up inside. The residence was about a half-mile away from where the woman’s body was found.

A crisis negotiator could be heard calling out to McKibben to call police and surrender.

San Diego police were first called at about 1 a.m. to the residence on Niagara Avenue by a man concerned about the wellbeing of his mother, Dobbs said. Police were unable to get inside the home to determine if the mother was there.

Hours later, the son arrived and forced his way into the residence, discovering a woman’s body covered in the garage. SDPD has not said if the body belonged to the son’s mother.

Moments before the discovery, the man spotted his brother, McKibben, running from the scene in a tan shirt, black shorts and a backpack; he has long brown hair and brown eyes.

The son who called police grew concerned for his mother’s wellbeing after receiving a phone call from her Tuesday night, Dobbs said. He tried to get in touch with her after the call and did not receive a response. The nature of the phone call was not disclosed.

Neither the sons’ mother nor the sons lived at the residence on Niagara Avenue, though the mother was the property owner, according to Dobbs.

Several residences in the multi-unit complex were evacuated as the tactical team surrounded the property.

The police activity closed several streets in the Ocean Beach area. Several patrol cars lined the streets near popular restaurants that were closed at the time, including the OB Noodle House and Raglan Public House.

Dobbs said the investigation could take several more hours.
