PB Restaurant Comes Together to Support Workers Hit by Car

Two servers at a popular Pacific Beach restaurant now face a long recovery ahead of them after they were hit by a car just after they finished their shifts.

Danny, Rema, and Brianna all work at Waterbar on Ocean Boulevard. They entered a crosswalk and then two of them were struck by a car near Mission Boulevard and Thomas Avenue at around 9:30 p.m. on Jan. 20.

“I just remember looking to my right and just seeing lights coming so fast and the only thing I had time to do was say, ‘Oh my God,’” Brianna said. “Just so many cars go faster than 35 here and you can tell.”

The group of employees said they made sure no cars were coming when they crossed.

“I just remember hearing the car hit them and the next thing I knew, they were 20 feet from me and both lying on the ground,” Brianna told NBC 7. She said she jumped out of the way just in time.

Danny and Rema were rushed to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.

Danny needed hip surgery and both of his legs are currently in braces.

Rema suffered a head injury and broke her knee.

The two were released from the hospital but won’t be able to work for weeks to come.

“The next thing you know, the people you see, talk with, and joke with every day aren’t there – instead they’re laid up in a bed, and it takes a toll,” Giuseppe, another server at Waterbar, said.

The Pacific Beach restaurant started fundraising to help their co-workers out. The employees have collected tip money and created a GoFundMe page to support them.

“It’s like a family here. Honestly, they’re really close friends and what happened is really tragic,” Giuseppe told NBC 7.

In its first week, the GoFundMe page raised two-thirds of its total goal, contributed by nearly 100 people.
