A man sailing his small boat from San Diego to Oceanside Saturday crashed into the jetty just before sunrise but was able to escape from the vessel unharmed.
The man told NBC 7 the engine on his boat died as he was coming into Oceanside Harbor just before 6:30 a.m. The rough waves pushed the boat into the north jetty near North Pacific Street, capsizing the vessel. The man was able to jump from the boat onto the rocks safely. He was soaked, but not hurt, he said.
Oceanside Police Department Lt. Kedrick Sadler said the capsized boat was reported to U.S. Coast Guard officials. The plan was to tow the vessel from the water as soon as possible.
As of 7:45 a.m. Saturday, the boat remained in the water, crashing up against the rocks. A salvage team was at the scene trying to determine the best way to pull it from the waves.
San Diego County’s coastal areas were under a beach hazards statement Saturday issued by the National Weather Service. Surf was expected to reach between 3 and 6 feet through late Saturday. A high surf warning would be in effect from 6 a.m. Sunday to 11 a.m. Monday, with waves reaching between 5 and 10 feet Sunday. The weather warning at local shorelines comes amid the second storm in a series of three sweeping San Diego County.
