Martinez Edges Out Ramirez for District 8 Runoff

With just three votes, Antonio Martinez has edged out fellow Democrat Christian Ramirez to face Vivian Moreno in the District 8 runoff election in November.

According to the results released Thursday by the San Diego Registrar of Voters, Martinez received 4,087 votes to Ramirez’s 4,084.

Voters in San Diego City Council District No. 8 were asked on June 5 to choose which candidate they would like to see replace termed-out Councilmember David Alvarez in 2019.

While Democratic candidate Vivian Moreno took the top spot with 35 percent of the vote, the picture was far less clear who she will oppose on the November ballot.

Ramirez was ahead of Martinez by just one vote on June 25 but on June 26 the county’s Ramirez had fallen behind by two.

A 2016 ballot initiative changed procedure in San Diego. No City Council candidate can win a seat outright in a primary. As a result, the two candidates with the most votes in June will advance to the November runoff.

It was unclear if Ramirez will demand a recount.

Under election rules, whoever requested the recount will pay for the registrar’s cost if the results aren’t overturned. If the results are overturned, then the person requesting the recount pays nothing.
