A man was arrested Wednesday on a murder charge hours after a verbal altercation ended in a fatal stabbing in Carlsbad.
Jay Terry, 36, was booked on suspicion of murder following a fight at the intersection of Tamarack Avenue and Jefferson Street, the Carlsbad Police Department said.
Residents in the area called 911 to report the fight at about 1:20 a.m. and later reported that one person was down in the street and another person had taken off.
Medics transported the injured man to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Carlsbad police described the victim as a 35-year-old homeless man.
Police searched for the stabbing suspect in the area surrounding Tamarack Avenue.
They were led to S. Pacific Street in Oceanside where Terry and a woman were detained.
Lee Ann Borrell, 35, was arrested on suspicion of identity theft and drug related charges, police said.
Investigators described Terry and Borrell as homeless.
The stabbing occurred across from Jefferson Elementary School just west of Interstate 5.
