Finishing touches were being made Thursday on a multi-million dollar project to widen an interchange in La Jolla.
The Interstate 5/Genesee Avenue Interchange Project to expand the six-lane overpass into ten lanes has been in construction since February 2015.
On Friday, city officials will unveil the bridge at the corner of Genessee Avenue and I-5 as well as widened access ramps and an arched bicycle and pedestrian bridge.
The $117.4 million project was proposed to alleviate traffic concerns in a congested area of La Jolla and make it safer for pedestrians to cross from the Sorrento Valley Coaster Station to surrounding schools and hospitals.
During the years of construction, there were intermittent traffic delays and overnight lane closures. Crews did work to keep pedestrian and bike lanes accessible while work was underway.
The construction project was funded through a partnership between the Federal Highway Administration, Caltrans and the San Diego Association of Governments. The city of San Diego and UC San Diego also contributed to the project.
