Berry’s Athletic Supply in Lemon Grove has a long history of serving the sports community in East County and beyond.
On May 16, it opened its doors at its new location at 2475 Lemon Grove Ave, after spending 25 years at is former location at Broadway and Grove Avenue.
Berry’s began in 1952 by Art and Bernice Berry as a Firestone Tire dealership, but with very few sporting goods stores around, they also sold toys, bats, balls and ball gloves. In 1981, the Enright and Healey families purchased the business. Co-owner John Enright said the 69 year old company is probably the only dedicated athletic supply company in San Diego.
Enright said over the past seven decades it has served the San Diego County community with quality products, excellent customer service, and provides athletic supplies for most high school, college, and youth, adult, semi-pro and professional sports teams.
“We carry all the high school and college sports,” said Enright.
In serving East County for 69 years, Enright said that it has worked with many private and school teams, having strong connections with SDSU, Grossmont College, GBG San Diego, San Diego Hustle Baseball, North County Mavericks High School & College Development Baseball Program, and is one of the main suppliers for USD baseball. Enright said it sponsors teams like 4s Ranch Little League, Rancho De Oro Little League and others.
Enright said that with the pandemic, it has been a tough year.
“We had our online store and that was what kept us going,” he said. “We opened our doors, but nobody was coming through it. A lot will depend on if kids start going back to school in the fall. We have had the same two employees for 15 years and four of us have worked here for 40 years.”
Berry’s Athletic Supply is located next to the Lemon Grove Café, directly across from the Lemon Grove Depot trolley station. Visit www.berrysathleticsupply.com for more information.
