Family of Infant Who Died in Foster Care Files Claim Against County

A local family filed a claim against the County of San Diego after their infant died while in foster care.

Zane Thomas was prematurely born in June, 2016. According to court documents, during the pregnancy his mother took drugs.

A few weeks after the baby was born the county placed him in a foster home.

And a few weeks after he was placed, he died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Donnie Cox is representing the Thomas family. He filed a claim against the county’s Health and Human Services Agency alleging they didn’t do enough following up on Zane after he was placed with a family.

The family is frustrated because they say this isn’t the first time it’s happened.

“We’ve received documents through the Department of Family Services as well as the police department that indicate that there was another child in their care that died while they were fostering children,” Cox said

According to court documents, Zane was the second child that died while in their custody.

A representative with San Diego’s Child Welfare Services tells us they’re not able to make any comment while litigation is pending.
