An Escondido mural will soon be unveiled to celebrate the city’s rich history after months of work from two long-time residents.
Leslie Mayor and Cindy Peters have been hand-painting iconic Escondido scenes along a 6-foot-tall brick wall that runs just off Ninth Avenue.
Mayor, who’s lived in Escondido for 45 years, and Peters, who’s lived there for 65 years, said the project is a labor of love. Though, the two described their painting experience as just a “hobby.”
“You get in the zone, and you, kind of, can’t think about anything else. Except how did that stroke look,” Mayor told NBC 7.
Peters said each portion of the 180-foot-long mural highlights the many treasures in Escondido.
“Kit Carson Park – our kids played there when they were little. They went down the snake slide. We ate at Peterson’s Donuts,” Peters said. “Grew up here, watched the town change – it was just about the size of early Ramona.”
Mayor recalled the Sikes Adobe Historic Farmstead on Sunset Drive. “That was one of my first memories in Escondido as a kid – what is now a Westfield mall.”
The mural near the Escondido Community Child Development Center was funded by two grants from the city in 2018.
Enrique Morales built the brick wall back in July of that year. He unexpectedly passed away just after, Peters said.
“We’re just really sad he’s not going to see it finished,” she said.
Though, with each brush stroke, Peter and Mayor said it’s been time well spent.
“We love Escondido. We’ve lived here all our lives. It’s really a special thing to give back to the community,” Mayor said.
The mural is scheduled to be completed in early April.
