El Cajon Residents Awake to Flames in Laundry Room

Residents of a home in El Cajon awoke Friday to find flames pouring out of their laundry room.

Correena Busse said her daughter was the one to alert them to the fire at their home on First Street, between Peach Avenue and Broadway, at about 5:30 a.m.

A “circus” of events followed, Busse said.

“We were looking for the animals and trying to find if we had a fire extinguisher and, everyone was kind of – she called 911 and everyone ran outside,” she said.

The Heartland Fire Department (HFD) arrived on scene shortly after and appeared to have the fire under control in about 30 minutes, according to NBC 7 crews at the scene.

Scott Busse credits a San Diego Gas & Electric inspection program with helping to get the family out quickly. Officials recently visited their home to install new detectors.

“We knew there was a fire probably within, I would say, within minutes of it starting,” Scott Busse said.

Correena Busse said the family has three dogs and a cat. They were able to get two of their dogs out of the home but one of their pets died and another was unaccounted for.

It was not clear what caused the fire to spark.

The El Cajon Police Department (ECPD) said nearby streets would be closed until further notice.
