Child in Car as Suspects Lead Police on Chase, 2 Arrested

A police chase through National City San Diego and Chula Vista ended Saturday night when two suspects, a man and a woman, crashed and bailed out of the vehicle while holding a child. The chase began when officers attempted to pull over a vehicle for driving without license plates near the 2000 block of Euclid Avenue in National City at about 4:10 p.m. Saturday, police said. The driver kept going, leading police south through San Diego and into Chula Vista.  Workers Hold Pro-Union Rally Outside Convention Center The chase came to a stop when the car crashed into two parked cars near the 200 block of Alvarado Street. That’s when the driver, identified as 21-year-old Sergio Ceballos and 20-year-old Sylvia Aurelia bailed out of the vehicle, National City police said. Aurelia was holding a little boy. National City Community Comes Together for WWII Vet’s 100th National City PD said they were unaware a child was in the vehicle until the chase was over. Surveillance video obtained by NBC 7 showed the suspects running in the same direction, on opposite sides of the street, through the Chula Vista neighborhood, in an attempt to evade police. Company Creates Gunshot Detection Technology At some point, a loaded .380 caliber pistol was abandoned onto the sidewalk.Nadine Garcia had just gotten home from work and was trying to nap when she heard Ceballos crash into her car. She told NBC 7 her kids took off chasing him after the crash and she stopped them.”I don’t know what the guy is up to. You know? He’s being chased by the police obviously. I don’t know if he’s armed or something,” she said.Neighbors helped locate Ceballos who was in a resident’s backyard. Police took Ceballos and Aurella into custody. Ceballos faces several felony charges, including child endangerment, evading arrest and felon in possession of a firearm. Aurella also faces charges.The child was watched over by NCPD until he could be returned to his biological father. National City Police is investigating the incident. No other information was available.
