Grossmont district teachers make top marks in competition

Two teachers from the Grossmont Union High School District  placed among the top five finalists in the annual Cox Communications Salute to Teachers awards, with a West Hills High School math teacher winning top honors.

Ana Nosal

Mount Miguel High School English teacher Ana Nosal was a finalist and Tiffany Jokerst was named a San Diego County Teacher of the Year Sept. 10.

Jokerst has been teaching in the district since 2006 and in 2020 was a Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching winner. She currently teaches math and Project Lead the Way Aerospace Engineering.

“My role as a teacher is to empower students to connect with the content through meaningful experiences in the classroom,” Jokerst said. “I love interacting with students and getting to work with great people every day.”

Nosal is the co-chair person for Mount Miguel’s English department and the co-cordinator English Learner program and a yearbook advisor. She has been with the high school district since 2007.

“I enjoy being able to work with my students and being able to advocate for them. (Teaching is) a great profession to be in, I just love everything about it,” Nosal said.

“Tiffany Jokerst and Ana Nosal are innovative educators who care deeply about their students and co-workers,” said GUHSD Superintendent Theresa Kemper. “They’ve earned these honors because they’re shining examples of the values that uniquely define GUHSD,”said Kemper.

Jokerst will now represent San Diego County in the state Teacher of the Year program.

The Cox Communications Salute to Teachers awards show will be broadcast in October on Cox Cable channel 4.
