Arrest in teen's hit-and-run death provides few answers for family

LA MESA, Calif. – Authorities on Thursday arrested a Spring Valley man on charges of felony hit-and-run in the death of a teenager earlier this year on an East County road.

Joseph Jok, the father of 18-year-old Jok Joseph Jok, lays flowers on Thursday, April 8, 2021, near Bancroft Drive and Golondrina Drive in La Mesa, Calif. where police found his son unresponsive after a February hit-and-run crash.

Scott Satterfield, 61, was booked into the San Diego County Jail after being arrested without incident at a Mission Valley motel, La Mesa police said in a news release. He is accused of driving the white pickup truck that hit and killed 18-year-old Jok Joseph Jok, found at around 9 p.m. Feb. 27 on the side of the road near Bancroft Drive and Golondrina Drive.

Jok, more commonly known as Michael Jok, sustained injuries to his head and shoulder and was unresponsive when officers arrived, police said last month.

His father Joseph Jok told FOX 5 that he’s glad to see a suspect arrested, but that plenty of questions remain for the family.

“Why? Was it intentional?” Joseph Jok said. “Why didn’t he stop to help?”

Michael’s sister Angwai Jok was with him the night he died. She remains shaken and says she remembers few details of the incident. The two had been in a car crash prior to Michael being hit and briefly separated.

“You ran from it,” Angwai Jok said. “You took zero accountability and that is exactly the opposite of what my brother believed in. He always took accountability for his actions. For him to just be left like that, to be hit like a deer or something. It’s quite sick.”

She added, “Our family will never be the same.”

Jok was an esteemed graduate of La Jolla Country Day School. He recently began an accelerated bachelor’s program through UC Riverside with ambitions of attending medical school.

His family is torn by the reality Michael will never be able to live out those dreams.

“If I ever got the chance, I would tell him had he known Michael, he would’ve stopped to save his life,” Joseph Jok said.

Detectives were able to identify Satterfield by working with San Diego County Crime Stoppers, local news media and members of the community, police say. Satterfield’s truck shown in photos released to the community also has been located and is in the possession of local police.

Satterfield’s bail currently is set at $100,000. He is scheduled to be arraigned next Thursday. Police released no further information on the arrest, citing the ongoing investigation.
