Woman Struck and Killed on SR-52 in Clairemont

Lanes have reopened after an investigation into a deadly pedestrian crash halted traffic on eastbound State Route 52 in Clairemont for hours Thursday morning, California Highway Patrol said.

A woman was standing in the eastbound lanes near Genesee Avenue when she was struck by an oncoming car at about 4:30 a.m.

The car stopped after the crash but was subsequently struck by another vehicle. The second vehicle also stayed at the scene and both drivers were cooperating with investigators.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

At the time of the crash, the woman was wearing a backpack and was wearing flip-flops distributed to patients of Sharp Memorial Hospital, so investigators were working to determine if the woman was recently released, CHP said.

The investigation prompted a SigAlert and all eastbound traffic was stopped and diverted off eastbound SR-52.

By about 6 a.m., one lane had reopened and traffic was moving at a crawl.

All lanes were reopened just before 7 a.m.
