Volunteers in La Mesa clean up after night of looting, arson around city

As volunteers rushed to clean up buildings damaged in La Mesa after protests turned riotous Saturday night, the city imposed a new curfew in the hopes of preventing a repeat episode of destruction.

The decision was made in an emergency closed session meeting early Sunday, and authorized City Manager Greg Humora to close the Civic Center parking lot and several streets near City Hall and the police station. Humora also serves as La Mesa’s Office of Emergency Services manager.

“La Mesa is reaching out to state, county and city agencies from across the county for mutual aid to ensure the peace,” La Mesa Mayor Mark Arapostathis said.

The city curfew runs from 7 p.m. Sunday until 7 a.m. Monday. County officials said curfews in other jurisdictions also are being considered, although details have not been finalized.
