Uptick in COVID cases

On June 28 the County of San Diego reported 12,334 positive COVID-19 tests, 1,747 hospitalizations, with 479 in intensive care units and 361 deaths in the county after the highest total of daily positive test in the county to date.

Chief Medical Officer Nancy Greengold, MD, Sharp Grossmont Hospital, said over the past week, Sharp Grossmont has seen an increase in the number of patients with coronavirus being seen in its emergency room and being admitted into the hospital.

“We assume that this increase is related to the progressive opening of the economy, and thus an increase in the community spread of this infection,” she said via email.

Greengold also said Grossmont Hospital is seeing an increase in the number of patients who do not have coronavirus who need hospitalization some in the ICU.

“This may be a reflection of the fact that many people delayed seeking medical care during the early months of COVID and now have serious illnesses requiring hospitalization,” she said.

Greengold said she supports the advice of public health officials.

“At this time, the best ways to try to stop the spread of this virus are to wear facial coverings, adhere to social-distancing guidelines, avoid large group gatherings and wash hands copiously,” she said.
