Road Closures Planned in La Jolla for Trolley Project

Blue Line Extension Trolley Mid Coast UTC

Daily closures of the La Jolla Village Drive and Genessee Avenue intersection will begin this week as construction continues for a Metropolitan Tansit System (MTS) route to connect Old Town to University City.

From Friday, Feb. 8 to Friday, Feb. 15,  there will be partial closures on the trolley bridge as crews install large beams to support the trolley alignment.

This is the sixth of seven large beams that will be installed on Genessee Ave. for the Mid-Coast Trolley Project.

This weekend, there will be closures of southbound Genessee Ave. lanes and through lanes at the La Jolla Village Dr. intersection from 9 p.m.- 5 a.m. There will be one lane open on northbound Genessee Ave.

For weekdays, there will be 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. closures each day. Two lanes will open on southbound and northbound Genessee Ave. Through lanes at La Jolla Village Dr. will be closed at Genessee Ave.

Weeknights, there will be 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. closures each night. The closures will be on southbound Genessee Ave. lanes and through lanes at La Jolla Village Dr. Intersection.

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and find alternative routes. Traffic control and detours will be posted.

The Mid-Coast Trolley Project began in Fall 2016 and is expected to be operational in 2021. Last January, the bridge that connects La Jolla to UC San Diego was unveiled.

The project in its entirety was expected to cost an estimated $2 billion, according to SANDAG. The project is funded by the Federal Transportation Administration and TransNet, the regional half-cent sales tax for transportation administered by SANDAG.
