Preliminary 3.9-Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Thousand Palms

A 3.9-magnitude earthquake shook parts of Riverside County on Sunday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.The temblor hit at 5:46 p.m. about 8 miles north-northeast of Thousand Palms located in the Coachella Valley.  Updates: Download the NBCLA App More than 60 people immediately reported feeling the quake, according to USGS. The quake was at the southern end of the faults that broke in the 1992 Joshua Tree/Landers sequence, according to Caltech seismologist Lucy Jones. It was very close to the 6.1-magnitude Joshua Tree quake that was almost exactly 26 years ago, she added.
