Police Pursuit Ends in Fiery Crash Outside National City Fire Station

A teenager who led police on a pursuit through National City Friday was pulled from a fiery crash just outside of the fire department’s headquarters.

Three teenagers were involved in the pursuit that began at a 7-Eleven on Highland Avenue and 24th Street just before midnight.

A National City police officer stopped an SUV for driving erratically.

When the vehicle stopped, two male juveniles stepped out of the car but a 16-year-old female behind the wheel drove away.

As she was attempting to turn from 16th Street onto D Street, the SUV struck a power transformer box and a gas line immediately in front of the headquarters for the National City Fire Department, according to police.

The SUV flipped onto its side, trapping the driver inside.

Two police officers pulled the teenager out of the wreckage.

The vehicle, which is registered to the driver’s mother, was still smoldering hours later.

It does not appear the teenager has a driver’s license, Sgt. Thomas Wilkins said.

The driver was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

San Diego Gas & Electric crews were working to repair the damage to the electrical and gas lines.
