Police Arrest Man Armed With Rifle in Oceanside Neighborhood

A man armed with an assault rifle prompted a search by ground and air in Oceanside Friday, police said.

The man was arrested at about 10:40 a.m. after running into a canyon near Loretta Street and State Route 76 in order to evade officers, the Oceanside Police Department (OPD) said.

OPD was initially called to a reported disturbance at a home on Loretta Street but when they arrived the suspect had taken off, police said.

The man’s truck was found in a nearby home’s yard and witnesses reported seeing the man with a rifle run into the canyon, OPD said.

A San Diego Sheriff’s Department (SDSO) helicopter helped police search for the suspect.

The man was found hiding in a nearby yard and was taken into custody without incident. OPD said the rifle was recovered but it was not clear if it was on the suspect at the time of the arrest.

It is not clear what charges he would be facing.
