Point Loma Water Pipe Break Caused by 2-Inch Feeder Pipe


A two-inch water pipe break in Point Loma prompted a Sig Alert in the 3700 block of Midway Drive Saturday morning just before noon.

The two-inch feeder pipe was replaced; workers originally thought the break was in the 16-inch mainline.

Traffic was closed in both directions as water flowed onto the street, San Diego police said.

Approximately 500 customers were without water service, the city said.

Atticus Coots who was visiting from Big Bear mini-river called it a “mini river.” “We were planning on going to the beach, but it may be a little harder since traffic is going to be on the other side,” he said.

Lisa Gonzalez is the hotel manager for Ramada Limited. “Customers can’t get in, we can’t wash the linen. Customers can’t take a shower,” she said.”  

Joel Lampert is the manager of Midway Pre-Owned. “We have some prior appointments that are supposed to be headed our way,” he told NBC 7. “And we tried to call them and let them know we have some problems with traffic, but yeah, this shuts us down.

The repairs were completed by around 5 p.m. the road is expected to be reopened a few hours later after crews from the city of San Diego Public Utilities Department finish checking the street for structural stability.
