Lemon Grove councilman resigns, city looks to fill rest of term

Lemon Grove City Councilman Matt Mendoza tendered his resignation, effective Nov. 4, 2019, with nearly a year left on his term.

Mayor Racquel Vasquez announced Mendoza’s resignation at the Nov. 5 city council meeting.

“The City of Lemon Grove owes councilmember Matt Mendoza our appreciation and respect for his service and dedication to our community,” she read in a prepared statement to the council and attendees. “During his tenure on the City Council his focus was on the financial security and health of the city, ensuring decision made by the council were a reflection of the needs of the community.”

Mendoza stated work responsibilities as the reason for his stepping down, a decision he said he did not come to lightly.

“His career path has recently required him to work out of state for long periods of time on a government defense program,” Vasquez said in her statement. “We wish Matt the very best of luck in his future endeavors.”

The Council met for a special meeting and discussed appointing a replacement. The deadline to apply to fill Mendoza’s seat was Nov. 21.
