Kayaker's Body Found at San Vicente Reservoir

A kayaker’s body was found in the San Vicente Reservoir on Saturday afternoon, according to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies said local lifeguards were searching for the kayaker around 11 a.m. after another boater spotted the overturned kayak.

They then discovered the man’s body in the reservoir around 12:15 p.m.

The kayaker was described as a man in his 50s of either Asian or Hispanic descent.

“You don’t even want to be out there on a boat like that, you know, for that matter,” Ken Hemer said. “A lot of guys came back in because the wind was blowing so hard, it’s very difficult.”

Hemer works at Rocky Recreation Store. He said conditions on Saturday was not favorable for kayaking.

The man’s body was handed over to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death.

Because San Vicente Reservoir is owned by the city of San Diego, the San Diego Police Department will be investigating.

Six months ago, a 12-year-old Canadian girl drowned after falling off a boat into the water the reservoir. Her body was found five days later. She was wearing a life jacket but slipped out of it.
