A disbarred San Diego lawyer who gained national prominence after defending Casey Anthony has been sentenced to 15-years in prison for conspiring to transport cocaine by plane between American continents.
Federal Prosecutors said Todd Macaluso was planning to fly more than 3,000 pounds, or $13 million worth of cocaine from Ecuador to Honduras.
The 55-year-old Macaluso was on Anthony’s defense team between 2009 and 2010. In 2011, Anthony was acquitted in the death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, in a high-profile Florida case.
In 2015, Macaluso was sentenced to five months in federal prison for fraud.
The attorney, who had a personal injury law practice in Rancho Santa Fe, apologized for defrauding clients by forging their signatures to obtain millions of dollars from investors.
As part of his sentence, he was ordered to be placed on three years of probation after his prison time was served.
