Firefighters put out a half-acre brush fire that began burning in a canyon behind homes in Rancho Peñasquitos Saturday afternoon.
The fire was reported at 2:15 p.m. behind the 12000 block of Ragweed Street and above Peñasquitos Creek, San Diego Fire-Rescue confirmed.
Firefighters accessed the blaze from Canyonside Park.
By 3:10 p.m., officials told NBC 7 the fire was out.
Officals report that the fire was started by possibly a lighter or a match.
The neighbors are preparing for the worst fire season ahead.
“All of a sudden I heard a chopper and immediately I knew something was up. We live on the hill right over here, you can hear the sirens one after the other,” said Karen Moore, a neighbor.
Firefighters said the grass in the canyon will be slow to burn but that can change if the winds are stronger. Neighbors are on high alert knowing better than to wait to pack up.
