Coronado plans to recycle dockless bicycles that have been impounded around the city.

According to city officials, more than 100 dockless bikes have been impounded in Coronado. The city plans to recycle bicycles that have been in storage for more than 90 days.

“The city wants to avoid the opportunity for the owners to circumvent paying the city fee for release,” said Clifford Maurer, Director of Public Services and Engineering for Coronado.

Coronado started impounding dockless bikes in March that were parked in public streets. The dockless bicycle companies were then charged a $45 fee to claim their bikes.

In late 2017, the company LimeBike requested a permit to operate. The City Council voted 5-0 to deny a permit request. Council said they did not wish to be an early adopter.

“The Mayor stated the City Council would observe how bike sharing fared in other communities and would be open to the possibility of reconsidering the permit request in a few years,” said Maurer.
