Central California search and rescue teams are on a mission to find a Camp Pendleton Marine who went missing during a ski trip in the Sierra Nevada.
The United States Marine Corps 1st Division said 1st Lt. Matthew Kraft was reported missing to the Mono County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) after he failed to return from a backcountry skiing trip on the Sierra High Route this week.
He left from the Kearsarge Pass trailhead in Independence, California, on Feb. 23 and was expected to finish near Bridgeport, California, March 4 or 5, the USMC said.
Mono County deputies started searching for Kraft Monday and have since been joined by the Inyo County Sheriff’s Department, Fresno County Sheriff’s Department, Madera County Sheriff’s Department, the CHP, Cal OES; and teams from Yosemite, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.
Search teams are also on the lookout for Kraft’s rental vehicle, a gray 2016 Jeep Wrangler coup, believed to be located somewhere near his starting point.
