Brigantine’s Newest Restaurant Concepts Open Along Bay

A new casual eatery and a gelato shop opened on Shelter Island, replacing a more than half-century-old restaurant and offering guests sweeping views of the San Diego marina and city skyline.

Brigantine, Inc. held a grand opening for Ketch Grill & Taps and Portside Gelato & Coffee on Wednesday, their latest dining concepts situated on 12,000 square-feet near the San Diego Waterfront at 2614 Shelter Island Dr.

The $3.5 million project replaced Red Sails Inn, which previously stood for six decades, and was designed to be energy- and water-efficient. The property uses drought-resistant landscaping and LED lighting to achieve that goal.

Ketch Grill and Taps serves a mix of fresh seafood and American pub-style food with over 18 craft beers on tap. The new casual eatery can seat about 200 people in its mixed indoor-outdoor building.

Portside Gelato and Coffee is a walk-up ice creamery with a selection of fresh-brewed espresso and coffee, using beans from local roaster Cafe Moto.

Delays in construction pushed back the stores’ openings from summer into fall. The two stores had soft openings in late September.

Brigantine, Inc. is also overhauling the former site of Anthony’s Fish Grotto as part of their Portside Pier Project.

They competed with Sunroad Enterprises and Fish Market Restaurants, the latter in partnership with Anthony’s, to secure a 40-year lease for the prime waterfront real estate in October 2017.

The entire project is expected to cost $20 million and bring four new restaurants to the North Embarcadero Area — two of which will be second locations of Ketch Grill & Taps and Portside Gelato & Coffee.

Anthony’s Fish Grotto was a historic part of the Port of San Diego for over 50 years.

Brigantine, Inc. owns seven Brigantine Seafood & Oyster Bar locations, six Miguel’s Cocina locations, and now one Ketch Grill & Taps location.
