Boy, Man Killed in SR-78 Head-On Crash ID'd

A young boy and man from Ramona killed in a head-on collision Monday morning on State Route 78 in Ramona were identified Tuesday.

The crash happened shortly after 11 a.m. when the driver of the Toyota Camry drifted to the side of the road and overcorrected on to the path of a white Ram pickup truck, according to the CHP.

The two vehicles crashed head-on at the intersection of West Haverford Road and SR-78, the CHP said.

There were four people, all from Ramona, in the Camry, two adults and two boys in the back seats. Both children were wearing seatbelts, but it was apparently improperly fastened, according to the CHP.

Christian Diaz, 7, died from his injuries on scene, the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office announced Monday.

Four people, three from the Camry and one from the truck, a 77-year-old man from Oregon, were transported to the hospitals, he said.

Gonzalo Rodriguez, 44, was driving the Camry. He was extricated from his vehicle and transported via Mercy Air to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido where he was prounounced dead, the M.E. said.

A white truck with a crushed hood could be seen in a ditch and the Camry could be seen nearby with the roof torn from the vehicle.

Debris was strewn across the roadway.

SR-78 was closed in both directions at Haverford Road and Pine Street and a SigAlert was issued just before 11:20 a.m.

The highway reopened just before 4 p.m.

Authorities do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash.
