'Aquaman,' 'The Clone Wars' Top SDCC's Most-Tweeted Lists

For movie and television studios hoping to make an impact on pop-culture fans at San Diego Comic-Con, the biggest testament to how they did may come from social media.

During the pop-culture event’s four-day run this year at the San Diego Convention Center, 3 million tweets were shared about SDCC and the movie and television shows being celebrated there, according to Twitter.

Arguably one of the most anticipated trailers of the con, DC Entertainment’s “Aquaman,” made the biggest splash on the social media platform.

Warner Bros. released the movie’s first official trailer to fans in SDCC’s infamous Hall H on Saturday followed by an exclusive sizzle reel, that featured Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Amber Heard’s Mera being chased atop rooftops and through buildings by Black Manta, the movie’s villain, portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.

The trailer was released to the public at about the same time.

The movie’s actors and director James Wan also shared what it was like to shoot the underwater movie and held a Q&A with fans.

The second most-tweeted movie, “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” also belonged to Warner Bros. The studio brought out actor Johnny Depp dressed as Grindelwald himself for a dark monologue before he apparated out of the hall.

Maybe the biggest surprise on the list was “Deadpool,” not because the character doesn’t have tons of dedicated fans but because the movie’s sequel had already been released, just months before SDCC.

Despite, the studio behind the movie advertised the character, Fox, advertised “Deadpool 2” heavily throughout the convention, with an extended cut screening of the movie featuring 15 extra minutes of content, a dance party on the convention floor, and even toilet seat covers with Deadpool’s face on them.

Here are the top five most tweeted-about movies at San Diego Comic-Con 2018, according to Twitter:

5. Deadpool
4. Thor
3. Star Wars
2. Fantastic Beasts
1. Aquaman

Star Wars dominated the television realm. The animated television series,”Star Wars: The Clone Wars” was celebrating the show’s 10th anniversary but a big announcement during the panel sent Twitter into hyperdrive.

Despite being canceled in 2013, the show’s executive producer Dave Filoni announced Thursday the show would be revived with 12 new episodes.

“A war left unfinished… until now,” a shot in the trailer reads before ending with #CloneWarsSaved.

To no surprise, superhero fandom continued to dominate SDCC. Three superhero television shows made the list — “Arrow,” Supergirl” and “The Flash.”

And, “Doctor Who” fans went wild for the 13th doctor and the first woman to play the role, Jodie Whittaker, as she made her first public appearance since landing the part.

Little was revealed about the upcoming season of the highly secretive show but the appearance alone was enough to make a dent on the Twittersphere.

Here are Comic-Con’s top-tweeted television shows of 2018:

10. The Flash
9. Supergirl
8. Wynonna Earp
7. Brooklyn Nine-Nine
