A weak but lingering storm system was bringing off-and-on showers to San Diego County for a second day Thursday.
Heavier pockets of rain were expected to fall during the morning commute and late evening, with the possibility for pop-up showers at any time through the day, NBC 7 Meteorologist Sheena Parveen said.
The storm pushed a band of rain across the county early Thursday, dumping showers on communities like Imperial Beach, Eastlake, Jamul, Lakeside and Ramona.
The ground across the county was soaked, and when combined with low visibility due to heavy morning fog, could have contributed to problems on roadways Thursday morning, according to NBC 7 traffic anchor Whitney Southwick.
Just before 6 a.m., three small crashes had been reported on freeways.
“Bottom Line is when we’re seeing these heavy pockets of rain, were seeing a lot of action pop up,” Southwick said.
The storm was increasing winds in the mountains, prompting the National Weather Service to extend a wind advisory through 8 p.m. Friday.
During the advisory period, winds are expected to average 25 to 35 miles per hour with some gusts reaching 55 mph, creating difficult driving conditions through valleys and mountain passes.
The mountains may also get a dusting of snow from this storm system on Friday, though totals likely won’t surpass one inch, Parveen said.
Rain would pick up again early Friday with spotty showers expected to last through the day as well. Skies should clear for the weekend but another storm system is expected late Sunday to kick off the work-week.
In total, the storm isn’t expected to drop more than an inch of rain on San Diego County over the three-day period. Parveen said numbers may be much less in some areas.
